As CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER continues to round out its cast, the frontrunners for the female lead role have been announced, which comes down to a race between Anna Kendrick (UP IN THE AIR), Imogen Poots (FRIGHT NIGHT), and Felicity Jones (LIKE CRAZY). Although it hasn’t been revealed just who these lovely actresses are vying to play, the answer shouldn’t be too difficult.
Based on the storyline that directors Joe and Anthony Russo have chosen and the fact that they’ve already cast Anthony Mackie as The Falcon, with Sebastian Stan reprising his Bucky/Winter Soldier role, the next logical choice would be to find a Sharon Carter/Agent 13. In the comics, Carter is an on-again-off-again SHIELD agent and, most notably, the niece of Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER.
In current continuity, Sharon Carter has served as the girlfriend of Steve Rogers and maintained that status for quite a while now. I think all of these candidates have potential for the role, but I’d most like to see it go to Kendrick, as she has shown great spark and charisma in her roles so far. Poots is a fine choice as well and Jones has the closest similarity to Atwell, but I don’t think a carbon copy is on order here. It’ll be interesting to see which way the filmmakers go.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER hits theaters on April 4, 2012.
