The Marvels’ Nia DaCosta thinks Captain America is to blame for Thanos’ snap

After Thanos retrieved all of the Infinity Stones, he quickly snapped half of the universe out of existence despite the best efforts of the Avengers. Since that moment, fans have debated who was at fault and how the Avengers could have stopped Thanos before that fateful moment, but The Marvels director Nia DaCosta has another theory: It’s all Captain America’s fault that Thanos was able to succeed in the first place.

While speaking with Inverse, Nia DaCosta said, “Something I like to say a bit flippantly about Captain America is that the Snap is all his fault because he was trying to do his best, trying to do the right thing. There is a world in which he’s a villain because, at the end of the day, he should have just sacrificed Vision. He chose one robot’s life, albeit a sentient one, over literally the entire universe. There’s a sort of anti-hero in that if you want to look at it through that lens.” What do you think? Could Captain America have stopped Thanos if he had just sacrificed Vision when he had the opportunity?

Production on The Marvels is currently underway with Brie Larson once again reprising her role of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. The sequel will also feature Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. Nia DaCosta also discussed how she’s bringing her own aesthetic to the Marvel formula.

For The Marvels, my biggest thing going into it was making sure I approached these characters as human beings and not necessarily as superheroes. I want to know more about Captain Marvel. Who is she? What are her fears? What drives her? How do you actually deal with being the most powerful being in the universe? How does that weigh on you? That’s the sort of thing I want to explore.

The Marvels will hit theaters on February 17, 2023.
