As part of a surprise announcement, Liv Tyler (Armageddon, The Lord of the Rings trilogy) is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! The actress will reprise her role as the scientist Betty Ross, first seen in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Tyler is returning for Captain America: New World Order, starring Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as the successor of the shield and stripes. Ross is the daughter of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who the late William Hurt played in multiple Marvel films before he passed in 2022 of prostate cancer. Harrison Ford will now play the General going forward.

The Incredible Hulk smashed onto screens in the summer of 2008, following the launch of Marvel’s first MCU film, Iron Man. The adventure features Marvel’s meanest and greenest hero, Bruce Banner/Hulk, played by Edward Norton before Mark Ruffalo embraced the role for The Avengers in 2012. Tyler starred in the film as Betty Ross alongside Norton, Tim Roth’s villain, Abomination, William Hurt as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, and Tim Blake Nelson – who played Samuel Sterns, aka The Leader, and will also be reprising his Incredible Hulk role in this Captain America movie.

Captain America: New World Order also stars Carl Lumbly as the original super-soldier Isaiah Bradley, with Danny Ramirez returning as Joaquin Torres. Shira Haas and Xosha Roquemore also star. Lumbly and Ramirez starred in Marvel’s Falcon and the Winter Soldier series on Disney+. Julius Onah (The Cloverfield Paradox) is directing the fourth film in Marvel’s Captain America series from a script by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson.

In Marvel’s Falcon and Winter Soldier series, Mackie’s Sam Wilson struggled to accept the shield to become the new Captain America. The series explores the Black superhero experience and scrutinizes the pride in wearing stars and stripes when a nation actively works to keep you down. Ultimately, Sam Wilson accepts the Captain America mantle. While the Captain America: New World Order plot remains under wraps, the story will likely continue to explore Wilson’s trepidation about taking on the role left to him by Steve Rogers.

Captain America: New World Order is part of Marvel’s Phase 5 plans, which include the following films: Ant-Man and the Wasp: QuantumaniaGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3The MarvelsThunderbolts, and Blade. Many fans deem Marvel’s Phase 4 as rudderless. In contrast, Phase 5 works toward establishing Kang (Jonathan Majors) as the new primary villain of the MCU and educating the masses about the concept of the Multiverse. The Multiverse opens countless doors for Marvel to do anything they damn well please, and I’m confident they’ll take full advantage.
