Nia DaCosta’s Candyman release date moves to August 2021

I just looked in the mirror and found a terrifying message scrawled in blood atop the glass. It says "Universal and MGM have moved Nia DaCosta's CANDYMAN to August 27, 2021." Previously, the retelling of the classic 1990s horror tale was slated for a June 2020 release, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced the movie to be postponed until October. When that didn't look like it was going to work out, the Candyman release was pulled from the calendar. Will August give the hook-handed nightmare man plenty of time to safely arrive in theaters? I certainly hope so because that's a long ways away, and if the world doesn't have its act together by then, what are we even doing?

The story takes audiences back to Chicago's Cabrini Green neighborhood where the legend of Candyman is still very much alive. Visual artist Anthony McCoy, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, moves into a condo in Cabrini and finds himself becoming entangled in the legend. It soon becomes clear that Candyman is more than just a spooky tale and a strange relationship begins between the supernatural killer and McCoy.

Nia DaCosta directs from a script she co-wrote with Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld. Joining Mateen II in the film are co-stars Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, Vanessa A. Williams, Rebecca Spence, Cassie Kramer, and the original Candyman, Tony Todd.

Nia DaCosta's CANDYMAN is now scheduled to arrive in theaters on August 27, 2021.
