On Friday, June 13th, 1980, Texas housewife Candy Montgomery killed her friend Betty Gore with an axe. Candy claimed that she struck Betty with that axe forty-one times in self-defense. Forty-two years later, we have dueling Candy Montgomery limited series heading our way. First up is Candy, which stars Jessica Biel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) as the title character and is set to premiere on the Hulu streaming service on Monday, May 9th. That premiere kicks off a five-night event, leading up to the finale on Friday, May 13th. The story that began on a Friday the 13th long ago will also end on a Friday the 13th. With the debut of Candy less than two months away, a teaser trailer has been released online, and you can check that out in the embed above.

A couple first look images, showing Biel as Candy Montgomery and Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets) as Betty Gore, can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Michael Uppendahl directed the first episode of Candy from a script by Robin Veith. The limited series has the following synopsis:

Candy Montgomery is a 1980 housewife and mother who did everything right—good husband, two kids, nice house, even the careful planning and execution of transgressions—but when the pressure of conformity builds within her, her actions scream for just a bit of freedom. With deadly results.

Biel and Lynskey are joined in the cast by Timothy Simons (Veep), Pablo Schreiber (Orange Is the New Black), and Raúl Esparza (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit). Elisabeth Moss had originally been attached to play Candy, but had to pass the role over to Biel due to scheduling issues.

Candy comes to us from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, and 20th Television, one of the Disney Television Studios. Veith, Uppendahl, and Biel serve as executive producers alongside Nick Antosca, Alex Hedlund, and Michelle Purple. Jim Atkinson and John Bloom will serve as consulting producers, as they wrote a book about the Candy Montgomery case called Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs, and also published articles on the case in Texas Monthly. Those articles were titled Love & Death in Silicon Prairie.

And here’s an interesting note for genre fans: John Bloom is also known as legendary movie host Joe Bob Briggs.

The other Candy Montgomery limited series is called Love & Death. Based on the writings of Atkinson and Bloom, that one stars Elizabeth Olsen as Candy Montgomery and will be released sometime this year through the HBO Max streaming service.
