One of the most thought-provoking elements of Tom Cruise's performance in JERRY MAGUIRE is the soul he gives to the sports agent in the title who sees the industry he's found success in a bit differently than many of his colleagues do. Whereas he may have once viewed the athletes he represented as commodities, he applies something much more personal to each and every one of them as he has an epiphany about his line of work. As a result, he tries to singlehandedly change the way his business treats its clients, penning a manifesto of sorts called “The Things We Think and Do Not Say: The Future of Our Business.” However, for trying to disrupt the status quo which is all about the bottom line, Maguire is fired, sending him off into the movie to try to find his own way in business, in romance, in life, giving us something to watch.
We only get snippets of Maguire's entire mission statement during that early part of the film, but Cameron Crowe really put in a lot of work to formulate those thoughts for Cruise's character – 25 pages to be exact. With the 20th anniversary of the film on the horizon, Crowe has now made "The Things We Think and Do Not Say" available in its entirety for you to check out. It really is a fascinating read, as it lays out the ways we as both consumers and, in many cases, employees of a corporate structure, wish things could be in a more perfect world, about business and its relationship to the customer… and if you've got a little time on your hands, it's definitely worth giving a look.
JERRY MAGUIRE turns 20 on December 13.
