We haven’t heard a peep or a catchy rock riff out of director Cameron Crowe since 2005’s ELIZABETHTOWN, a film that wasn’t that generally well received by most and only passively defended by even the filmmaker’s most ardent supporters. So, what’s going on?
According to Variety (in an extended article detailing the difficulties musical biopics have had in making it to the big screen), Crowe has been quietly working for the last three and a half years on assembling the key components to a biopic on Motown legend Marvin Gaye.
However, “despite securing extensive music rights and the full cooperation of Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr., the project, with Scott Rudin attached as producer, is being reconceived until Crowe and Sony can come to terms on a budget and a star (Will Smith, who has an ongoing relationship with Sony, declined the part after much discussion).”
Shame that Smith declined, as I think he would’ve made a great Prince of Soul (Fresh Prince of Soul?) Who do you guys think would make for a great Marvin Gaye?
