Looks like a favorite X-Men character may be returning to the big screen in a much different form. Warren Worthington III, better known as Angel, was last seen in Brett Ratner's X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, played by Ben Foster. While that iteration of the character played on his heroic side, comic fans know that Angel has a history with Apocalypse, which is why the latest news from director Bryan Singer is so exciting.
Singer shared the below production art via his Instagram. His comment merely references it as production art for X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, but this seems like the reveal that Angel will in fact be a character in the sequel.
For those unfamiliar, Angel was altered genetically by Apocalypse to become his Horseman of Death which changed him into Archangel. For years, the character has switched between hero and villain, similarly to Jean Grey's transformations into Phoenix. How the character will be incorporated into X-MEN: AGE OF APOCALYPSE is unknown at this point. It seems highly unlikely that Ben Foster will return, but with the time travel aspects of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST eliminating the events of X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, Singer pretty much has a blank slate to introduce the character the right way.
X-MEN: AGE OF APOCALYPSE is slated to hit theaters on May 27, 2016.
