While it didn't kick off the trend, Bryan Fuller's HANNIBAL was one of the best of the "shows made out of movies" genre, alongside other such shows like 12 MONKEYS, BATES MOTEL, MINORITY REPORT, LETHAL WEAPON, and the recent EXORCIST. It was stylish, dark, gruesome, but best of all fun. The show dealt with dark subject matter, but always with a sense of (pitch-black) humor.
So it was a shame when NBC cancelled it after its third season, especially since it ended on a cliffhanger (literally, with Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) and Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) going over a cliff together).
But there's still (some) hope! Series creator Bryan Fuller feels that they could end the series with a miniseries (similar to what happened recently with FOX's X-FILES). Here's what he said, talking to the Blumhouse's Shock Waves podcast:
We still hope that something can be worked out where we continue telling Hannibal Lecter stories and see The Silence of the Lambs in a way that the book hasn’t been represented. I think the film adaptation is a perfect film, but there’s a lot of interesting nooks and crannies in that book to explore in a television series…I think, ideally for the cast, it would be as a miniseries, here and there. Let’s do six to eight episodes of that, and six to eight episodes over here. And do it as an irregular thing.
Don't know about you guys, but I'd be down. Let's just hope Fuller doesn't over-extend himself again, as his various commitments (namely the awesome looking AMERICAN GODS series) is what made him have to step down from showrunning STAR TREK DISCOVERY. Obviously, this is all just hope and bullshitting anyway, but who knows? Stranger things have happened.
But what do you guys think? Fans of the show? And if so, you excited for more?
