Two of the greatest characters actor Bruce Campbell has ever played are Ash Williams from the EVIL DEAD franchise and the elderly Elvis Presley in 2002's BUBBA HO-TEP. Those two characters are now set to cross paths in the upcoming Dynamite Entertainment comic book ARMY OF DARKNESS / BUBBA HO-TEP.
There have been a ton of ARMY OF DARKNESS crossover comics over the years. Ash has met characters like RE-ANIMATOR's Herbert West, Darkman himself, Marvel Zombies, warrior princess Xena, Vampirella, the stars of the Hack/Slash comic… The treatment for the unmade FREDDY VS. JASON sequel that would have added Ash into the mix was even adapted into comic book form. Aside from FREDDY VS. JASON VS. ASH, ARMY OF DARKNESS / BUBBA HO-TEP may be the most awesome crossover yet.
Created by Scott Duvall and Vincenzo Federici, this crossover will have Ash meeting Elvis due to
a series of universe-spanning events that involve an Elvis jumpsuit with special time-travel abilities, a trip to ‘70s Vegas, plus the reveal of an evil new Book of the Dead, the Necronomicon Ho-Tep.
Duvall has this to say about the project:
Being a huge fan of the character of Ash, and by extension, actor Bruce Campbell, I was instantly drawn to the movie Bubba Ho-Tep, based on an original story by the great Joe R. Lansdale, and starring Campbell as Elvis. Immediately upon release, I added it to my DVD collection, and I would group it with Army of Darkness because it felt like a companion piece to it. Often viewing them in close succession, I knew the Ash and Elvis team-up would go together like peanut butter and banana. These two worlds already fit so well together in tone, it made it totally plausible that they could co-exist on the same plane. Wanting to see what it would be like if Ash and Elvis interact is a big part of what sparked this, and so I'm thrilled we'll get to finally see that in these pages."
Joe R. Lansdale, who wrote the novella BUBBA HO-TEP was based on, added:
Script and art for the first issue of Army of Darkness/Bubba Ho-Tep are as delicious as a fried peanut butter and 'nanner sandwich. I'm as excited as if I had good sense and owned Ft. Knox. Can't wait!"
The first issue of ARMY OF DARKNESS / BUBBA HO-TEP will be released in February 2019. There will be multiple covers to choose from, featuring art by the likes of Robert Hack, Carlos Gomez, Emma Kubert, Diego Galindo, and Tom Mandrake.
