Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel soars to $20.7 million Thursday night preview

Despite being the victim of baseless boycotts, endless Twitter debates, and having been review bombed on Rotten Tomatoes, Brie Larson's CAPTAIN MARVEL has persevered at the box office with $20.7 million earned from the film's Thursday night previews in North America. For all you mathletes out there, that number makes CAPTAIN MARVEL the 18th-highest preview number of all time and the fifth-biggest for a Marvel title, flying high just behind AVENGERS, BLACK PANTHER, and CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVAL WAR.

Upon going nova on up to 4,310 locations on Friday, International Women's Day, analysts have the film pulling anywhere from $125-$150 million during its opening weekend. That's a mighty impressive number for Marvel's first female-led superhero film. Though what makes these totals even more exciting is that we've yet to learn the international box office totals, with the exception of China's $30 million opening day take. As those amounts continue to superhero land throughout the weekend, it's possible that we'll see Carol Danvers go higher, faster, and further at the box office than many of her male Marvel compatriots.

Let it also be known that CAPTAIN MARVEL is the hero theaters need right now, particularly after a ho-hum two month start to 2019. To put things in perspective, the North American box office has slumped by 27% to $1.57 billion through March 6. Furthermore, let's take a look at the top three, non-inflation-adjusted March opening weekends of all-time: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST ($174.8 million), BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE ($166.0 million), THE HUNGER GAMES (152.5 million). If CAPTAIN MARVEL continues to shine throughout the weekend, BoxOfficePro – for a myriad of reasons – says that it could earn up to $195 million, shattering the above mentioned features into stardust.

In CAPTAIN MARVEL, Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Marvel's 21st superhero adventure also stars Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg, Lee Pace, Djimon Hounsou, Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn, Jude Law and Annette Benning, among others.
