Bride of Frankenstein remake may still be alive yet!

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

The Dark Universe was an utter, hilarious failure – a would-be cinematic universe that folded after just one movie (the Tom Cruise bomb THE MUMMY). Hell, even Sony's doomed AMAZING SPIDER-VERSE got two movies! Even worse, before it finally shuttered completely, it had many films in-development, including THE INVISIBLE MAN starring Johnny Depp (which was later made by Blumhouse last year, sans Depp), and a BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN remake starring Javier Bardem as Frankenstein's Monster, and Angelina Jolie being eyed for the titular Bride.

However, it looks like the film may still be alive! During an interview with Collider, the screenwriter of the proposed BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN remake – David Koepp – had this to say about the status of the film:

That was one thing I did during quarantine – I brought back BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN into a place where I kind of always wanted it to be. Universal was very gracious to let me try again. Because they had geared up and shut down famously in the Dark Universe fiasco. Well, not fiasco, but disappointment. So I have a version now and they have a version that we all really like. I think they’re talking to directors now,

When asked if it will be as stripped down as the eventual INVISIBLE MAN remake, he said, "it’s not the great big, $150 million extravaganza with giant movie stars…It’s not as scaled down as INVISIBLE MAN but much more reasonable, doable thing, with, I think, a really cool idea and it’s all present day." He even went on to praise Universal, despite the obvious Dark Universe blunder, stating:

To their credit, what I really admired about Universal is they threw their hands up and went, ‘Hold on. This isn’t working out. Let’s stop and think for a year or two.’ I thought that was really smart. And big corporations don’t often do that. There aren’t a lot of New Coke moments where they go, ‘This is not as we hoped. We’re going to stop and go off on this other direction.

Obviously no release date as of yet, but we'll keep you updated if anything comes to fruition!

Meanwhile, here's the synopsis from the original film:

After recovering from injuries sustained in the mob attack upon himself and his creation, Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) falls under the control of his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger), who insists the now-chastened doctor resume his experiments in creating new life. Meanwhile, the Monster (Boris Karloff) remains on the run from those who wish to destroy him without understanding that his intentions are generally good despite his lack of socialization and self-control.

So what do you guys think? Down for a BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN remake? Or do you think they should leave well enough alone (like the lesson of the film)? Either way, sound off below!
