Last month, it was announced that HBO’s Succession would be ending after four seasons. That’s a relatively short run considering two of its three seasons so far have won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. After the news broke, some of the core cast members began speaking out. Now, it’s Brian Cox’s turn to give his take on the end of Succession.
Characteristically, Brian Cox was rather curt on the topic of Succession ending. “I’ll miss the cast, I’ll miss the atmosphere, I’ll miss the bonhomie…Logan, probably, I’ll miss a bit. But upward and onwards,” he told Variety. Onward and upward is definitely the way the 76-year-old actor is going, with a number of projects already lined up, including voicing a character in the animated The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.
Other cast members also agree with Brian Cox about the conclusion of Succession, albeit in very different phrasing. Alan Ruck, who plays Connor Roy (son of Cox’s character), said, “The truth is, we’ve all known on the show since June…And I think it’s the right time to end it in terms of the struggle to see who’s going to take command of this empire. A fifth season would have been drawn out, and if it just faded away, that would have been a disgrace.”
One thing people will surely miss about Succession is hearing Brian Cox deliver Logan Roy’s catchphrase: “Fuck off!” Cox acknowledged that it does indeed have a following. “[Fans] don’t yell ‘Fuck off.’ They just say, ‘Can you tell us to fuck off?’ And I happily do so: ‘Fuck off.’” So, yes, if you see Brian Cox on the street, he will tell you to fuck off. Now we wonder how many times he has wanted to tell Jeremy Strong that exact phrase…
Hopefully we hear Brian Cox deliver that iconic line when season four of HBO’s Succession debuts on March 26th. If that season wins the Outstanding Drama Series Emmy, it would best programs like Breaking Bad and The Sopranos.
