Brendan Fraser, Ke Huy Quan and RRR win big at the Critics’ Choice Awards

While the Oscar nominations haven’t been revealed yet, the potential front-runners are becoming more obvious following the recent Golden Globe wins and last night’s Critics’ Choice Awards. While Austin Butler is widely considered a favorite to win for Elvis following his Globe win, last night Brendan Fraser took the best actor trophy for The Whale, meaning the award race is neck and neck between the two of them. The same goes for best actress, with Michelle Yeoh taking the Globes, but Cate Blanchett winning for Tár as the Critics’ Choice. One award that seems all but a sure thing is Ke Huy Quan as best supporting actor for Everything Everywhere All At Once, with him taking both the Globes and the Critic’s Choice Awards. The Oscar seems well within reach for the comeback kid, which is heartwarming for those of us who grew up with him in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies.

Another interesting race is shaping up for best foreign film. The Globes awarded Argentina, 1985, but the Critics’ Choice Award went to the Indian epic RRR, which is riding a new wave of popularity. The film was also up for Best Picture at the Critics’ Choice Awards, and there’s a grassroots campaign happening in Hollywood right now to get it a legit Nest Picture nomination, with Jason Blum recently throwing his weight behind the film (which we loved before most – check out this review).

To note, I’m a voting member of the CCA’s, and I have to say, I was proud to see Ke Huy Quan get another win under his belt. That said, my foreign fil vote went to the great All Quiet on the Western Front (despite how much I liked RRR). Here’s a full list of the CCA winners:
