Platinum Dunes and Paramount Pictures are in the midst of taking a big step forward in the resurrection of Jason Voorhees happening sooner rather than later, Breck Eisner to direct the next FRIDAY THE 13TH flick.
JoBlo can confirm that Breck Eisner, who last sat in the director's chair for THE LAST WITCH HUNTER, has entered into talks to helm Jason's return, as Aaron Guzikowski's most recent draft of the script appears to have gotten the ball on the relaunch rolling out of development and towards production.
Eisner has waded into the waters of horror in the past. At one point, he was attached to direct a remake of CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON before it eventually crumbled, and he does have a remake of THE CRAZIES, which is okay, to his credit. Will he be a good fit for Jason? It would certainly be nice to have an interesting director bring some flair to the character, that's for sure.
But as we all know, the success or failure of any future FRIDAY THE 13TH picture is going to rest on how frightening the horror aspect of the equation is. I'm not sure Jason running around killing teenage victims in creative ways is going to cut it anymore, and, if I were calling the shots here, I'd get back to basics of making Jason scary again, making him a monster again, making him the villain again. The audience shouldn't want to cheer for him to get his hands on the latest face from The CW. They should want them to run for their lives, praying for the slim chances of their survival.
