Let's get this out of the way right off the bat, Robert Rodriguez is not confirmed to be the new director of the upcoming ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake. All of this is just "talk" for the moment.
That said, Rodriguez is said to be Fox's top choice to take over the remake after directing ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL for the studio earlier this year. Rodriguez is supposedly just as eager to stay in business with Fox, who also produced PREDATORS with Rodriguez a few years back. (Also worth noting that ESCAPE is one of Rodriguez’s favorite movies.)
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but we know Neil Cross (Luther) wrote the new script, and the studio plans to "follow the same formula employed by its Planet of the Apes franchise to great success", whatever exactly that means.
ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK’s synopsis:
A 1981 American dystopian action film co-written, co-scored, and directed by John Carpenter. The film is set in the then near-future 1997 in a crime-ridden United States that has converted Manhattan Island in New York City into a maximum security prison. Ex-soldier Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is given 24 hours to find the President of the United States (Donald Pleasence), who has been captured by prisoners after the crash of Air Force One.
I love Robert Rodriguez's early work right up through GRINDHOUSE, but still the idea of an ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake hits me as something the world does not need. And I am usually for (or at least not opposed to) remakes.
In the case of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK however, it's the 80's, Carpenter, and the tone that what make the flick great. Also, Kurt Russell. But that goes without saying. Kurt Russell makes everything better.
Original ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK director and horror-God John Carpenter will serve as an executive producer on the remake. So there's that…
