It wasn't all that long ago when a Max Landis spec script was at the center of a Hollywood bidding war which ended when Netflix outbid the competition for BRIGHT, a supernatural cop thriller to be directed by David Ayer which is set in a world where magical creatures live side by side with humans and will star Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. Now The Wrap is reporting that a new spec script from Max Landis is in the midst of another bidding war. Luuucky.
The outlet reports that several major studios and financiers are all very interested in DEEPER, which is set to star Bradley Cooper and will be directed by Kornel Mundruczo (WHITE GOD). DEEPER will be a drama "about a disgraced astronaut who embarks on a mission to reach the bottom of a newly-discovered oceanic trench, which some speculate may be the lowest point on Earth. Facing great danger, he quickly finds himself in a physical and psychological fight against mysterious forces." Landis compared DEEPER to BIRDMAN, THE SHINING, LOCKE, 2001, and THE DESCENT, with a little Hayao Miyazaki thrown in for good measure. Certainly sounds like an interesting project and, as we definitely need more films set beneath the waves, I'm already intrigued.
Bradley Cooper's upcoming projects include Todd Phillips' WAR DOGS in which he'll appear alongside Miles Teller and Jonah Hill, as well as returning to voice Rocket in James Gunn's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 which is set for a May 5, 2017 release.
