Now, if you told me that Bradley Cooper would be directing another film version of A STAR IS BORN, and that Lady Gaga would be his star, I would ask you what hallucinogen you were on, and would then proceed to smack you while shouting, “The power of Christ compels you!" Well, turns out you weren’t that crazy, and I apologize for all the slapping.
Yes, Deadline reports that Cooper will indeed direct Gaga in A STAR IS BORN, set to begin production next year. Warner Bros president of Creative Development and WW Production Greg Silverman put out a quote saying:
For those of us lucky enough to watch him work as an actor and producer, it has been clear that Bradley would make this transition to director. We are honored that he is doing it, here, at his home—Warner Bros.—and with Lady Gaga as a collaborator and co-star. The world is in for a treat as these great artists craft an all new vision of A Star is Born.”
BORN tells the story about a woman who comes to Hollywood seeking fame and fortune, and as her star begins to rise the limelight around her famous lover/mentor begins to fade. There have been three other versions of this movie, the first staring Janet Gaynor in 1937, the second with Judy Garland in 1954 and the most recent in 1976 with Barbara Streisand.
I never saw AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL, so I can’t really speak to Gaga’s acting abilities, and this would be Cooper’s directorial debut, so his directing skills are a little green to say the least. Still, Deadline mentions that Cooper won over Warner Bros. execs during his time on AMERICAN SNIPER, and it was apparently enough to earn him the job on BORN. But, hey, if Ben Affleck can successfully transition to the directing field, why can’t Cooper?
Production is set to begin on A STAR IS BORN next year. You can see Cooper with Miles Teller and Jonah Hill in WAR DOGS this Friday.
