Early numbers have begun trickling in and seem to align with our predictions. First is The Woman King starring Viola Davis, with $6.8 Million. Buoyed by $1.7 Million from its Thursday previews that began at 3 pm, the film is tracking for an $18 Million opening. There is still potential for it to hit around the $20 Million range I had predicted on Thursday, but that all depends on word of mouth. With a strong A+ CinemaScore, it seems audiences and critics are in agreement on this one, with critics saying that Viola Davis’ performance is worth the price of admission alone.
The Ti West-directed Pearl starring Mia Goth as the titular character, is tracking slightly worse than expected with an estimated $3.2 Million for the weekend, which is slightly worse than the previous film in this recently announced trilogy, X, made back in March of this year.
See How They Run was rolled out to over 2400 theaters, but the advertising dollars weren’t there for this resulting in an unspectacular $2.7 Million projected weekend. Critical reception has been mixed, with our own Chris Bumbray giving it a 7 out of 10 in his review.
In limited release Clerks III is doing pretty solid business with $1.5 Million made since its Fathom Events release on Wednesday. That may not sound like a lot, but when you consider the film only had 1 showtime each day, that is fairly impressive. If you are a casual Kevin Smith fan, this movie is for you as it returns him back to the Quick Stop where it all began and caps a trilogy that truly changed the face of independent cinema.
The remainder of the top ten will be filled in with your hold-overs, including Barbarian, Bullet Train, and Top Gun: Maverick, still milking every last dollar they can as one inch ever closer to the $100 Million mark and the other inches up the all-time record books.
