The numbers have begun trickling in and it appears Paramount’s Smile is holding up far better than anticipated. It may end up leading the weekend with a potential $13 million finish in the movie’s second week of release. This is a really good hold for a horror film, which are notoriously front loaded. Word of mouth on this one has been solid.
Right now it looks like the family film Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile is coming in a bit softer with only $11 million based off its Friday gross of $3.3 million. I still hold firm to my original prediction that this film can get to the $15 million mark as family films like this tend to make most of their money on Saturday and Sunday when families are more likely to get to theaters. I still believe the singing croc will eke out a victory this weekend, although it may be a photo finish.
After enjoying a string of successful theatrical outings, it appears David O. Russell has his first mainstream flat out box office bomb on his hands as the star studded wide release Amsterdam is only projected to finish around the $7 million mark. As a fan of David O. Russell films, I did catch this one in theaters on Thursday and fully agree with our own Chris Bumbray’s review of the film where he said it was enjoyable, but kind of a mess!
Doing strong numbers during the week and potentially having a surprise top 10 finish this weekend is the horror film Terrifier 2. I’ll be honest, I had never heard of this film or its predecessor Terrifier until this weekend. I enjoy a nice slasher film, and when you add in sadistic resurrected murderous clowns, I may have to check these films out. This sequel was able to secure more money on Thursday ($403,900) than the recent release Bros ($384,620).
The remainder of the top 5 should be filled out with the Viola Davis starring Woman King followed by the Florence Pugh fronted Don’t Worry Darling.
