Just a quick update for you on this Holiday Saturday: Estimates this weekend are all over the place as some are reporting Disney’s Spider-Man: No Way Home- The More Fun Version will claim first place with around $7 Million over the 4 day holiday weekend while others seem to think Brad Pitt’s Bullet Train can reclaim the crown in its 5th weekend of release.
The big wrench is whether the first ever National Cinema Day with its $3 tickets will drive business to theaters, but even if it does, those $3 tickets probably won’t amount to much in terms of dollars and cents.
Top Gun: Maverick is still flying high and could surpass the $700 Million domestic mark this weekend, however with the film becoming the best selling week one digital release of all time, perhaps people are deciding to stay home this weekend to enjoy Tom Cruise’s highest grossing film ever.
Numbers have not been reported for new release Honk For Jesus, Save Your Soul which can only mean one thing: it is a box office bust. Despite decent reviews, it is no surprise the film is tanking as it had barely any marketing and anyone who did want to see it may have just decided to check it on the Peacock streaming service.
This is a far cry from one year ago when Marvel launched Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to the record books with a $83.5 Labor Day total. The lesson here is: people will go to the theaters when there is product out that is worth the trip. Studios over the past few weeks, and for the next few weeks to come are leaving a lot of money on the table by not releasing anything worth venturing out to the theaters for.
Things aren’t looking up for next weekend either with only the horror film Barbarian set to open wide with box office tracking having it in the same range as last weeks horrendous Invitation opening.
Will you be venturing out to theaters today for a nice $3 ticket? Or is the lack of good new releases keeping you away for the next few weeks? Let us know in the comments and don’t forget to check back tomorrow when we have a full rundown of this weekends box office numbers.
