Proving just how unpredictable a weekend this was, Top Gun: Maverick has come out on top for the Labor Day four day total with an estimated $7.9 Million surpassing Black Panther to become the fifth highest grossing domestic release of all time. Bullet Train is actually coming in ahead of projections with a second place finish and $7.33 Million in receipts.
This drops the projected number one, Spider-Man: No Way Home- The More Fun Version down to third place with a total of $6.55 over the holiday weekend.
Top Gun: Maverick closes out the summer the way it started: on top! Finishing in first over both the Memorial Day weekend and now Labor Day weekend, becoming the first movie to ever do that. This is quite the feat for what has become not just a movie, but a cultural event. Given the widespread love for the movie, this may be the true test for the Academy Awards this year: can Top Gun: Maverick ride all the way to a Best Picture nomination? It would certainly help steer the conversation away from other Oscar topics!
Saturday’s National Cinema Day proved to be quite successful, even if it didn’t boost the dollar’s and cents of the weekend, with this weekend becoming the lowest grossing weekend of the summer with just $53.1 in box office grosses, $200,000 less than last weeks title holder. It did bring people back to the theater with over 8 million people going to the theaters on Saturday alone. To put that in perspective, last years record breaking holiday take by Shang-Chi saw only 7.8 Million in attendance for the three day weekend. Perhaps proving that for some people, the cost of going to the movies has just gotten too much!
The rest of the top ten saw some shake ups as well with the re-release of Jaws moving up two spots on the list.
Below we have the updated four day totals and don’t forget to check out our poll and let us know what movie you would love to see re-released to the big screen.
