Box Office Prediction: Black Adam should top for a 3rd week in a row

Black Adam, cameo

With no major new titles being released this weekend, Black Adam should remain atop the box office for a third straight week. The Dwayne Johnson led film posted an under 60% decline last week and should hold up a bit better this weekend as it doesn’t have a major holiday to deal with.

If anything can possibly come along and usurp Black Adam’s crown, it would be the latest from CrunchyRoll studios One Piece Film: Red. Crunchy Roll is not a studio to be taken lightly as they launched Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero to a first place, $20.1 million finish less than three months ago. As we said back then, these movies tend to be heavily front loaded with fans eager to get to the theaters for them in opening weekend and as such, it would not be a shock if this latest animated film lands a first place finish this weekend.

Banshees of Inisherin

The big draw for many this weekend will be the expansion of two Award’s season contenders with Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin (a film our own Chris Bumbray gave a rare perfect 10/10 rating). The film will be hitting 850 screens this weekend which may not be enough to land it at the top of the list, but will help continue to build solid word of mouth as it continues its expansion throughout this Awards season.

The other potential Oscar darling expanding weekend is the James Gray directed Armageddon Time (which Chris Bumbray didn’t like as much as Banshee’s, giving it a measly 9/10). This Palme d’Or nominated film doesn’t exactly sound like a light hearted good time at the theaters, so it may need to rely heavily on the Awards circuit to get butts in seats, luckily it has already racked up a Gotham Award nomination for Best Screenplay with many more likely to come.

We can expect Award season breakout’s Till and Tár to still make their presence known this weekend as the adult movie going crowd seems to be finally embracing a return to theaters (by adult films, I mean narrative movies aimed at a more mature audience, not the other type of adult film which I’m sure never saw a decline in attendance!)

Cate Blanchett TAr

With Halloween over and done with, you can expect the horror films that have filled the top ten these past few weeks to start making their inevitable declines, although Smile really seems to be the little movie that could as it inches ever close to that $100 million mark.

Will you be heading to theaters this weekend or is the new release of Jennifer Lawrence’s Causeway on Apple TV+ going to keep you in? Let us know in the comments, and don’t forget to check back on Saturday when we give a brief update on the box office numbers.
