Boone reveals when fans can expect to see Warlock in The New Mutants trilogy

For me, the most exciting aspect of Josh Boone's THE NEW MUTANTS trilogy is having the opportunity to see Illyana Rasputin a.k.a. Magik up on the big screen. She's one of my all-time favorites in Marvel's extensive pantheon of characters, and I'm anxious to experience what Anya Taylor-Joy brings to the chaos magic-wielding mutant.

By that same token, there's another character that Marvel fans are looking forward to seeing appear as a part of Boon'e master plan, and that character is Warlock, the technology-based lifeform who comes complete with shapeshifting abilities. In regard to why Warlock did not appear in the trilogy's debut film, some say that it could have been due to budgetary restrictions, as the character would likely be presented entirely in CGI.

Recently, while speaking during a panel at Comic Con Experience 2017 in San Paulo, Brazil, Boone said that he and his creative team prioritized the characters that meant the most to them for the first film – Magik (Anya Taylor-Joy), Wolfsbane (Maisie Williams), Sunspot (Henry Zaga), Mirage (Blue Hunt), and Cannonball (Charlie Heaton) – but that fans will be introduced to even more exciting personalities and powers as the series continues.

In addressing how the films were pitched to 20th Century Fox, Boone previously revealed that, “We brought it to Fox as a trilogy of films, really all based on that long run by [Bill] Sienkiewicz, and kind of incorporates some stuff from later issues in the ’80s,” Boone said. “These are all going to be horror movies, and they’re all be their own distinct kind of horror movies. This is certainly the ‘rubber-reality’ supernatural horror movie. The next one will be a completely different kind of horror movie. Our take was just go examine the horror genre through comic book movies and make each one its own distinct sort of horror film. Drawing from the big events that we love in the comics.”

THE NEW MUTANTS director then continued by mentioning some of the film projects that served to inspire his work on the mutant-related film series: “Our whole pitch for this series was based on Bill Sienkiewicz run with Chris Claremont [The New Mutants vol. 1 #18–31, 35–38], so it’s very much when New Mutants became dark and surreal and more horror driven,” Boone explained. “We were incredibly inspired by the Demon Bear story which is probably the best, well-known New Mutants story. We also drew on movies like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Stephen King stuff, and even Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.”

Lastly, Boone also revealed to audience members of the Brazil-based Con that the next film in the trilogy may take place in Brazil, which could lead to the introduction of Marvel's The Hellfire Club, an elite an influential group of wealthy individuals whose thirst for power knows no bounds. With two more films on the way, I've no doubt that Warlock will be making an appearance, though who I'm really hoping will turn up is Kade Kilgore, the genius son of weapons-manufacturer, Carlton Kilgore.

THE NEW MUTANTS will arrive in theaters on April 13, 2018.
