Earlier this week, film star and producer Tom Cruise, who has just had Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One released in the last week, was reported to have tried to convince the AMPTP to consider SAG-AFTRA’s position on AI and stunt performer terms. This was during the negotiations in June, and unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to persuade any party to come to an agreement. Although Cruise is supporting the strike, the Mission: Impossible star also reportedly urged the guild to ease the restrictions on promoting films during the strike as the star feels it is imperative for the saving of cinema as movie theaters fight for survival during these rough times. Especially since this week features two high-profile releases, Barbie and Oppenheimer.
Bob Odenkirk isn’t seeing eye-to-eye with Cruise on this issue. The Better Call Saul star, who had awakened his own action prowess with the 2021 movie, Nobody, talked to The Wrap from the picket lines with his response to the idea of promoting during a union strike. “Don’t. It’s a strike. Strike. You lose. We lose. Everybody loses. That’s tough s–t,” Odenkirk said in a video on Wednesday. Comedy actor Ike Barinholtz, also seen in the video next to Odenkirk, added, “Yeah, we all are in this together and if some of us are starting new projects and promoting others, that’s gonna cause dissension. We need the opposite. We need solidarity.” Odenkirk, then added, “Sometimes you have to do the hard thing.”
Cruise is taking a bit of a hit among his acting peers with his recent stance on loosening the restrictions. While he urged SAG-AFTRA to allow promotion during the strike, the union would consider it as they countered with a request that he join them in the picket line. Cruise was reportedly non-committal but said he would show his support in other ways. According to The Wrap, the attitudes towards Cruise had swayed with the protesters. Odenkirk, meanwhile, is squeezing in his support even when he has to honor personal commitments, “I actually am gonna go on a little trip. So I won’t be able to strike for a little while. So I wanted to get out as much as I could before I go. And then when they come back, I’ll be back on the line, and I’ll see you as this is gonna go on.”
