Blumhouse & James Wan team for killer doll flick M3gan

It was only a matter of time before the two biggest names in horror today, Blumhouse and James Wan reteamed (following INSIDIOUS) for an all-new horror film, and today we have just such news as THR has just reported that Wan and Blumhouse will be collaborating on a new killer doll flick called M3GAN (cute title).

Australian director Gerard Johnstone (HOUSEBOUND) will be the one helming this new film with Wan and Jason Blum producing. Jason Blum on director Gerard Johnstone’s skills at black humor:

We needed someone who can do the thrills and set pieces but who also has a cheeky approach.

James Wan:

I had such a great time working together with Jason on Insidious, a film that did a lot of good for both of us. I don’t forget where I started from and I’m grateful and appreciative of Jason. We’ve been looking for something to collaborate on again since.

LUKE CAGE writer Akela Cooper will pen the script, which tells the tale of:

A brilliant toy company roboticist who uses artificial intelligence to develop M3GAN, a life-like doll programmed to emotionally bond with her newly orphaned niece. But when the doll’s programming works too well, she becomes overprotective of her new friend…with terrifying results.

James Wan on the premise:

Pretty much the concept is about embracing technology too much and relying too much on it. And what happens with technology runs amok. It’s a commentary on the world we live in and it feels relevant.

The film will be directed by Gerard Johnstone (HOUSEBOUND) with Wan and Jason Blum producing. Michael Clear, of Wan’s Atomic Monster banner, will executive produce with Judson Scott shepherding for the company. Blumhouse’s Couper Samuelson will exec produce while Ryan Turek will oversee for the banner.

The techno-horror thriller killer doll project will shoot this fall.
