Blumhouse Productions is one of the biggest names in horror these days, and having successfully conquered cinema they are now setting their sights on doing the same with television. The company has launched their own independent TV studio with the backing of ITV Studios and intends to finance and produce both scripted and unscripted genre shows. The first genre show Blumhouse Television has in development is a TV series based on the THE PURGE franchise.
Blumhouse will be producing the Purge TV series with Universal Cable Productions, and the plan is that the show will air on both USA and Syfy.
Producer Jason Blum had this to say:
We are excited that with the launch of this new studio, we are expanding our partnership with NBCUniversal by growing The Purge franchise into a television series and are grateful for their incredible support of Blumhouse overall."
The announcement that THE PURGE is heading to television is really no surprise, since franchise creator James DeMonaco said last September that he was interested in taking the concept to the small screen:
… what might be interesting in a TV show is with a flashback narrative, if you start on Purge Night but you go back to show how people have gotten to where they are. Where you see a couple that's gone haywire on this night, but let's show everything that's led up to this moment of a husband trying to kill a wife — the cheating or the accusations of cheating or money problems. It will be interesting to show those arcs, those dramatic and complex arcs that get people to where they pick up a gun or a knife and kill someone else."
DeMonaco will be overseeing the series. Writers are already at work on the show, which will be executive produced by Platinum Dunes and DeMonaco's producing partner Sebastien K. Lemercier.
While the TV show is being developed, another PURGE film is also in the works and has been scheduled for release on July 4, 2018. There are no details available on that project yet, but in September DeMonaco said he was considering making the next film a prequel.
