Blue Beetle: Susan Sarandon to play villain in DC movie

Last month, Sharon Stone was in talks to play the main villain of the upcoming Blue Beetle movie, but it would seem that Stone couldn’t take the role as The Wrap has now reported that Susan Sarandon will play Victoria Kord in the Blue Beetle movie.

There’s no word on why talks fell through with Sharon Stone, but it’s exciting that Susan Sarandon will now be joining the DC Universe. In addition to Susan Sarandon, the Blue Beetle movie will star Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) in the leading role of Jaime Reyes, along with George Lopez (Beverly Hills Chihuahua), Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood), Elpidia Carrillo (Predator), Damián Alcázar (Miss Bala), Belissa Escobedo (American Horror Stories), Bruna Marquezine (God Save the King), Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), and Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayans M.C.). Charm City Kings director Angel Manuel Soto will helm the DC project from a script by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala).

In DC Comics, Jamie Reyes becomes the third person to take on the mantle of the Blue Beetle after Dan Garret and Ted Kord (who shares a last name with the villain) when he discovers the Blue Beetle scarab that morphs into a battle suit allowing him to fight crime and even travel through space. Xolo Maridueña teased earlier this year that his time with Cobra Kai has helped him prepare for his first superhero role.

This is really gonna be a stepping stone in my life. I’ve gotten the chance to build chemistry with these people over the years on “Cobra Kai.” To try to recreate that chemistry in a much shorter amount of time is gonna be difficult, but all of these guys are professionals. I know that I’m in the hands of people who are the best at what they do. The opportunity at “Cobra Kai” has really blessed me; I can do stunts, we can do crazy stuff. Adding this new level of green screen and suits and CGI and all of this will add a whole new crazy level to it that I’m so excited for.

Blue Beetle will be released on August 18, 2023. Susan Sarandon will next be seen in Monarch, a multigenerational musical drama about the Romans, a first family of country music. The series was supposed to have premiered on Fox earlier this year but has since been pushed to the fall.
