As the summer movie season limps away, making way for the fall/winter releases, it is customary for those who couldn’t (or wouldn’t) catch all the “blockbusters” in theaters to prepare for the home video releases of all those that didn’t make the cut for a theatrical viewing. For some it’s merely a matter of buying up their favorites, but for others it’s a chance to see how good or bad that missed flick was. All of the below films were controversial to some degree, each being a risky venture, a return to form, a tough sell, a missed opportunity, or completely unnecessary. I’ll leave it up to you to decide which is which.
Here’s the rundown:
ROCK OF AGES – October 09, 2012
Synopsis: Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Julianne Hough star in this rock musical comedy based on the Broadway stage show of the same name. When seedy 1980s LA rock dive the Bourbon Rooms comes under threat from property developers, owner Dennis Dupree (Baldwin) enlists the assistance of weathered rock legend Stacee Jaxx (Cruise) to keep the good times rolling. Meanwhile, young lovers Drew (Boneta) and Sherrie (Hough) fight to keep their love on track as they chase their dreams in the big city. The film features music by 1980s rock acts such as Def Leppard, Foreigner, Journey and Poison.

SAVAGES – October 23, 2012
Synopsis: Three-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone returns to the screen with the ferocious thriller Savages, based on Don Winslow’s bestselling crime novel, one of The New York Times’ Top 10 Books of 2010. Laguna Beach entrepreneurs Ben (Johnson) and Chon (Kitsch) raise and sell some of the best marijuana ever developed, while sharing a one-of-a-kind love with the extraordinary beauty Ophelia (Lively). Their idyllic life is shattered when the Mexican Baja Cartel demands that the trio partner with them. But the cartel’s merciless boss, Elena (Salma Hayek), and her brutal enforcer, Lado (Benicio Del Toro), underestimate the unbreakable bonds among these three friends.

Synopsis: Explores the secret life of Abraham Lincoln before he became President, and the untold story that shaped our nation. Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton (Dark Shadows) and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) bring a fresh and visceral voice to the bloodthirsty lore of the vampire, imagining Lincoln as history’s greatest hunter of the undead.

MAGIC MIKE – October 23, 2012
Synopsis: Set in the world of male strippers, Magic Mike is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Channing Tatum in a story inspired by his real life. The film follows Mike (Tatum) as he takes a young dancer called The Kid (Pettyfer) under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women, and making easy money.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN – November 09, 2012
Synopsis: The story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. When Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.
