It’s a brand-new year, and do you know what that means? It’s time to make room on your shelves for new Blu-rays! I recently had to move a good portion of my collection around after acquiring a bunch of titles over the holidays. As much as it is a pain to move every row over to a new location, it sure was satisfying to see the finished product. That said, I’ll have to make room for at least two more Blu-rays this Tuesday when I pick up a copy of Scott Cooper’s Antlers and the 4K edition of Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You.
After experiencing several delays due to the pandemic, Antlers can be yours to own on Blu-ray. The story takes place in an isolated Oregon town, where a middle-school teacher and her sheriff brother become embroiled with her enigmatic student, whose dark secrets lead to terrifying encounters with an ancestral creature. Antlers stars Keri Russell, Jesse Plemons, Jeremy T. Thomas, Graham Greene, Scott Haze, and Rory Cochrane. I’ve been wanting to check out Antlers since the day that a disturbing trailer for the film landed in my inbox.
Another film I plan to pick up is the 4K version of Makoto Shinkai‘s Weathering With You. Shinkai is the filmmaker behind some of my favorite anime films of all time, including The Place Promised in Our Early Days, Voices of a Distant Star, Children Who Chase Lost Voices, and by far his most popular film to date, Your Name. In Weathering with You, a high school boy who has run away to Tokyo befriends a girl who appears to be able to manipulate the weather. I bet this film is incredibly emotional, drop-dead gorgeous, and includes a killer soundtrack that will make hearts soar. I haven’t seen it yet, but I bet that my predictions are right on the money.
Speaking of money, you can spend yours on other titles coming out this week, including Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin’s Covid drama Together, starring James McAvoy, Sharon Horgan, and Samuel Logan. Other titles that are set to hit the shelves are Zeroes and Ones, Black Friday starring Bruce Campbell, The Djinn, The Superdeep, and more.
