Blade: Rapper Travis Scott shows interest in collaborating with Marvel for the soundtrack

Wesley Snipes’ Blade from 1998 was a big moment for the Marvel brand. The film breathed new life into the legendary comic label as the company was facing uncertainty in its future. Blade was more of an obscure character that many didn’t recognize nearly as much as Spider-Man or X-Men. However, its crossover appeal with the vampire element, as well as Snipes being one of the 90s biggest action heroes, the first film in the series became the first successful film in the company.

Flash forward to today and Marvel is now a Hollywood institution, and to an extent, its own sub-genre. There are many different connotations that can be implied when people refer to a “Marvel movie.” Things are about to come full circle as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been preparing to integrate the vampire hunter into the newest phase. Rapper Travis Scott is one person who is eager for the new interpretation. In fact, Scott would put out into the universe how he would want to collaborate with Marvel on a soundtrack for the new iteration. According to The Direct, a social media post from Scott stated, “Woke up thinking I would love to do the soundtrack to Blade.”

The rapper had garnered controversy during his performance at the Astroworld music festival in 2021 when the artist was sued for encouraging violence that caused deaths among concert-goers as well as leaving many injured. Although Scott has collaborated with Marvel Studios before with the Black Panther soundtrack, his troubles that cropped up since then leave the opportunity in question. Black Panther‘s soundtrack was a big seller that featured many pop artists, including Scott, Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, Khalid, Future, The Weeknd, SZA, and more.

The MCU’s Blade is slated for February 2025. The production for the film was to commence in Atlanta this past summer, but the Writers Guild of America strike prompted Marvel to delay the start of filming. The movie was hit with a delay before SAG-AFTRA joined the picketing with their own strike. Now Blade is swimming in a sea of postponed films. Mahershala Ali takes up the mantle of the Day Walker, and Yann Demange is sitting in the director’s chair while True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto had been hired to punch up the existing script.
