The Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer made its grand debut in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con before making its way online soon after. Social media chatter indicated that fans were viewing the trailer in mass once it was made available, and now we know just how many views the first look at Wakanda Forever did in its debut.
Per Variety, the teaser trailer scored 172 million views in its first 24 hours, making it one of the MCU’s top trailer debuts. The figure nearly doubles the 88 million viewers that the original Black Panther teaser saw in 2017. Social Media was also on fire for Wakanda Forever, with topics relating to the film garnering 893,000 mentions. The hashtag #WakandaForever held the No.1 trending spot for over five consecutive hours, while Chadwick Boseman, Namor, Shuri, T’Challa, Ryan Coogler, and Angela Bassett about became national trending topics as well.
Spider-Man: No Way Home has the highest amount of views in 24 hours, with 355.5 million. This represents a high for the standalone MCU films and the group Avenger films. The teaser for Thor: Love and Thunder follows for the standalone projects with 208 million views, meaning Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is right behind it for standalone titles. The four Avengers films have pulled in bigger numbers, including the teaser for Avengers: Endgame (289 million), the final trailer for Avengers: Endgame (268 million), the teaser for Avengers: Infinity War (230 million), and the final trailer for Avengers: Infinity War (179 million).
Making the views more impressive for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is that the teaser debuted on Saturday at 9:20 PM EST, which isn’t the ideal time to drop a highly-anticipated trailer. Most trailers premiere during the week and in the morning to take advantage of fans re-watching during their workday.
The success of the trailer comes as no surprise. Many fans eagerly anticipated the first look at the sequel and wanted a glimpse of how they would handle the passing of Chadwick Boseman, who led the original film before passing away in 2020 after battling a private fight with colon cancer. The trailer has seemed to strike an emotional chord with fans, and it has received overwhelmingly positive notices on social media.
