Okoye, Black Panther 2, Black Panther 2 spinoff, Marvel Studios

Get ready to shout yibambe and toss your weaves to the wind because Marvel Studios could be developing a Black Panther 2 spinoff. A new report spinning out of GWW suggests that a project centering on the Dora Milaje General Okoye is in the works. Okoye, played by Danai Gurira, was introduced in Ryan Coogler’s Oscar-winning MCU epic Black Panther. She is a fierce warrior, a trusted friend of the Wakandan royal family, and a partner to Daniel Kaluuya’s W’Kabi. Since her Black Panther debut, Okoye has appeared in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Marvel’s Disney+ animated series What If…?

Gurira will wear the Wakandan armor as Okoye again when she reprises the role for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The upcoming sequel to Marvel’s 2018 smash also stars Lupita Nyong’o, Martin Freeman, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, and Angela Bassett. The follow-up is currently in production and will reportedly pave the way for an Okoye-led Black Panther 2 spinoff. Speaking of which, GWW says the project is likely to be a streaming series. To be clear, Marvel has yet to announce any formal plans for a Black Panther 2 spinoff, but GWW assures its readers that the information they’ve obtained is sound. Take that for what you will, True Believers.

In addition to talking about the Okoye spinoff, GWW says that their source has confirmed several more productions for 2023, including Fantastic Four, Nova, a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and a secret project that has yet to be revealed. The site also claims that Marvel Studios is producing a Thunderbolts movie, with production slated to begin in 2023. In the comics, the Thunderbolts are a group of reformed villains who join forces for a series of heroic missions. Sound familiar? The team is led by Thaddeus E. “Thunderbolt” Ross, played by William Hurt throughout several films in the MCU canon.

What do you think of there possibly being a Black Panther 2 spinoff revolving around Okoye? Do you think this could be one of the many mystery projects currently in the works at Marvel Studios? Will fans receive an honest-to-goodness series exploring the Dora Milaje before DC gives us the Amazon-focused project we all deserve?
