Writer/director John Pata’s feature debut Black Mold won Best Indie Feature when it screened at the Panic Fest film festival earlier this year, and now a wider audience will have the chance to see just how it good it is, as the film has been released through the Tubi streaming service. To help you decide whether or not this is something you’d like to watch on Tubi, we have the film’s trailer embedded above.
Said to be a hallucinogenic urban exploration horror story, Black Mold has the following synopsis: Photographer Brooke and her pal Tanner sneak into abandoned, off-limits buildings for the sake of their art and also the adrenaline rush. But when the daredevil pair break into their holy grail – Franklin Hill, a large facility with a history – they encounter a dangerously paranoid squatter who holds them captive. The longer their attacker keeps them there, the more it becomes clear there’s something else profoundly wrong with the place as dangers surface at the intersection of artistic pursuits and internal sabotage.
The film stars Agnes Albright (True Detective), Andrew Bailes (No Resolution), and Jeremy Holm (Brooklyn 45).
Our friends at Bloody Disgusting note that Black Mold is a Head Trauma Production, in association with The Line Film Co. and Shatterglass Films. Sarah Sharp, Jen Shelby, Robert Patrick Stern, and Iman Sharabash produced the film, with Jill Gevargizian, Tony Wash, and Kevin McGrail co-producing.
It’s actually the name Tony Wash that has me most interested in Black Mold, because I’ve been keeping an eye on his career ever since I picked up a copy of his “choose your own adventure” horror movie It’s My Party and I’ll Die If I Want To at a convention back in 2008. So if Wash is involved with Black Mold, I need to check it out.
Pata and Wash previously worked together on The Stylist (produced and edited by Pata, with Wash as associate producer) and Gags the Clown (produced, edited, and co-written by Pata, with Wash providing the makeup effects).
