Yesterday some rumored plot details for the new BLACK MIRROR event movie, BANDERSNATCH, were revealed, hinting at a choose-your-own-adventure style that lets audiences choose from over five hours of footage over the course of a 90-minute story. The movie drops tomorrow, December 28, so we will know for sure exactly what’s going on with it then, but for now get a taste of the movie with the first mind-bending trailer that finds Fionn Whitehead (DUNKIRK) going through some psychological issues while digging into a mysterious new video game.

Directed by David Slade (30 DAYS OF NIGHT) and also starring Will Poulter (DETROIT) and Asim Chaudhry, the story is set in the 80s and, well, that’s all the confirmed details we know other than the video game element. Should it take on the CYOA format then the story can go any number of ways. All we can really take from this trailer is that the thing looks trippy as all hell and will take the normally dark routes other BLACK MIRROR shorts do. I mean, it doesn’t look like he’s playing the new Super Smash Bros. there.
Lending more validation to the CYOA format is the constant flashing of the word "change" in the trailer, as in, "change your past" and "change your future," perhaps hinting at a story that lets you change what's going on. I don't know. Perhaps this is just a normal movie that looks kind of cool and we don't have any control over what's going on at all. Maybe that notion in of itself is the darker point to the story after all. Well played, BLACK MIRROR.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
“In 1984, a young programmer begins to question reality as he adapts a sprawling fantasy novel into a video game and soon faces a mind-mangling challenge. Welcome back. ”
BLACK MIRROR: BANDERSNATCH hits Netflix on December 28.
