Black Mirror: Bandersnatch reportedly features five hours of footage

Just when you thought Christmas was over, Netflix and the creators of BLACK MIRROR have one last late-in-the-game present for you in the form of the new outing, BLACK MIRROR: BANDERSNATCH. The landing page for the movie showed up on Netflix recently, confirming that this was not part of the upcoming fifth season (set for 2019), and is instead the series’ first feature-length movie. Now we have the first photo from said movie, which apparently takes place in the 80s and stars Will Poulter (WE’RE THE MILLERS, DETROIT), Fionn Whitehead (DUNKIRK), and Asim Chaudhry (BBC's BOYS JUST DO NOTHING).

The photo (above) is the biggest reveal, showing all three actors gathered around a computer, lending credence to the reports that the movie would be set in the world of video games. But there are still plenty of rumors out there about the project. With the drop of the landing page on Netflix, some customers are seeing runtimes attached as short as 2 minutes, but others as long as 90 minutes.

Furthermore, a leak from the Korean Media Rating Board reveals the movie has as much as 312 minutes of footage, supporting past reports the movie is of the choose-your-own-adventure variety. Should this prove true, that means that with the 90-minute runtime there’s 312 minutes worth of footage to access, with what you see depending on where you take the story. The movie is expected to drop on Netflix December 28, and we will then know exactly what the hell this thing is.

Also confirmed is that the project was directed by David Slade (30 DAYS OF NIGHT), who also did the BLACK MIRROR episode “Metalhead,” as well as episodes of BREAKING BAD and AMERICAN GODS. Along with the photo came a rumored synopsis, which reads: “A young programmer makes a fantasy novel into a game. Soon, reality and virtual world are mixed and start to create confusion.”

Also lending a bit of validation to the supposed premise is the movie’s title, BANDERSNATCH, which refers to a 1984 game (the year the movie takes place) that was never released. The word “Bandersnatch” also refers to a creature named in writer Lewis Carroll’s work, namely “Through the Looking Glass,” teasing a story that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality.

Now, there's a lot being talked about when it comes to this project, so it's best to treat it all with a grain of salt until the thing actually comes out, which apparently is in only a few short days. Until then just think about clearing your schedules, because if all this is true that's about five hours of your life you're going to have to spend with BLACK MIRROR.
