You don't have to be in the same gym space as Dwayne Johnson to smell that the box office behemoth is cooking up quite the sweat as he prepares for the production of Black Adam to begin next week. Earlier today, the eight circles wearing Under Armor posted a photo to his official Instagram account that places him in the throes of a workout routine fit for a superhero.
DC Films' Black Adam has set an all-star cast, with Aldis Hodge (Carter Hall / Hawkman), Noah Centineo (Al Rothstein / Atom Smasher), Quintessa Swindell (Maxine Hunkell / Cyclone), Pierce Brosnan (Kent Nelson / Dr. Fate), Sarah Shahi (Adrianna Tomaz / Isis), and Marwan Kenzari joining Johnson for the upcoming film.
"It’s always the work we quietly put in when no one is watching that changes the game," Johnson wrote in his Instagram post. Now, I'm not calling Johnson a liar. I wouldn't dream of it. But the idea of him being quiet during one of his grueling workouts strikes me as an impossibility. I'm sure there's plenty of grunting going on in his personal gym, as the former wrestler-turned-action hero lifts untold amounts of weight above his giant head.
Directing Black Adam is Jaume Collet-Serra (The Shallows, Jungle Cruise) from a script written by Rory Haines, Sohrab Noshirvani, and Adam Sztykiel. Johnson was cast for the titular role of DC's caped anti-hero back in 2014. In many ways, Johnson has been training for the part for years, and I do not doubt that he's going to give this movie his all.
The film has yet to receive an official synopsis, though we do know that it will serve as a prequel to Shazam! Johnson recently announced that Black Adam will arrive in theaters on July 29, 2022. He also had this to say about the black-suited anti-hero: "Five thousand years ago, Kahndaq, was a melting pot of cultures, wealth, power, and magic. Yet, most of us have nothing, except for the chains around our necks. Kahndaq needed a hero, instead, they got me. I did what needed to be done and they imprisoned me for it. Now, five thousand years later, I'm free and I give you my word… No one will ever stop me again."
Do Dwayne Johnson's legs frighten you? Could you imagine being kicked by those things? He'd put you right through a wall. No problem. Man, I hate to be whichever hero attempts to put him down in the upcoming film. Godspeed to you, heroes. You're going to need it.
