Black Adam release date moved to allow more time for VFX to finish, says producer

DC’s Black Adam was set to be one of the biggest films of the summer until Warner Bros. decided to shuffle around some of its DC releases earlier this year. Instead of premiering in July, The Dwayne Johnson-led comic book film was pushed to October 21, 2022, and now producer Hiram Garcia is providing some insight into why this decision was made.

During a chat with TheWrap, Garcia revealed that the decision was made to allow more time for post-production to be completed. The producer noted that there are several other films in the same position as Black Adam and fans shouldn’t be worried about any delays because of that:

“I think we’re just in a world right now where there was a huge and understandable freeze-up when the pandemic hit and a lot of productions were put on hold. Now that the industry has really roared back, the pipeline for VFX is so jammed. Obviously all these superhero movies just require so much VFX, and we’re just in a situation where the majority of the VFX houses are just completely swamped with work.”

According to the synopsis, “Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods – and imprisoned just as quickly – Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.”

Black Adam is a DC Comics character that started as the archenemy of Captain Marvel, later named Shazam! The character is an Egyptian prince who was chosen by the wizard Shazam! to be his champion until the power corrupted him. Due to that corruption, Black Adam was chained up and sealed away for millennia but is released in present times with a thirst for vengeance. The character received a more sympathetic back story in later comics that turned him into more of an anti-hero. Black Adam is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and, in addition to Johnson, the film also stars Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Quintessa Swindell, Marwan Kenzari, and Sarah Shai.

Do YOU agree with the reason Black Adam’s release date was pushed? Black Adam now hits screens on October 21, 2022.
