This year’s SHAZAM! may not have been the box office behemoth of its aquatic or Amazonian counterparts, but it won over critics and audiences and even set the stage for the entrance of another DC character: Black Adam. The character’s movie has been in production limbo for several years, but Dwayne Johnson remains attached and, being a famous adversary for Shazam, is closer to the big screen than ever. The movie has found its director in Jaume Collet-Serra (THE SHALLOWS), and the producer of the movie offered a promising update on the movie's development.

Hiram Garcia, the producer of many of Johnson’s movies, was at the premiere for the superstar’s latest, HOBBS & SHAW, and there he spoke with CinemaBlend on the state of BLACK ADAM. The producer obviously didn’t talk much about specific details, but he did express his excitement over Collet-Serra and what their vision is for the movie.
Jaume is a real talent. He is one of my favorite directors I've ever worked with. Not only is he talented, he's an unbelievable collaborator. He's an amazing visionary. And what we have in store with Black Adam and for the fans, I am so excited inside. Inside, I take pride as being a fan boy. I started as a fan boy before I became a producer, so I hold onto that DNA. His vision for what we want to do with Black Adam is fantastic. So, that deal's almost closed. He's ready to go, and I think the fans are going to be really happy.

Audiences got their first taste of Black Adam when the wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou) recounted the story of a champion they picked long ago, but who then used his powers for evil and unleashed the Seven Deadly Sins, killing millions of people in the process. Since the movie’s release, Collet-Serra was tapped to direct after working with Johnson on Disney’s JUNGLE CRUISE, and Johnson then said the movie could start shooting “in about a year.”
The slate of DC movies is pretty packed at the moment, but BLACK ADAM is one they've been trying to get going for years. With SHAZAM! providing a strong foundation for the world of magic and heroism, the entrance of the character will push it to epic levels, and give Levi's hero his biggest adversary ever in Johnson. Chances are the ADAM movie will come befoe the SHAZAM! sequel, but either way, I can't wait to see Levi's quips go up against Johnson's muscles.
