After releasing a brief character teaser trailer and allowing for a few photos from the film's production to make their way to the masses, things have gone quite dark on BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FATABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN), DC's upcoming female-focused feature.
Thankfully, Total Film recently sat down for a fireside chat with the highly-anticipated project's writer, Christina Hodson, who informed the outlet that the movie will serve as a "standalone" effort, rather than continue the groundwork previously laid by David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD.
"It's a character we have met before, but it's really its own story, and that's kind of how I approached it," Hodson said. "I just tried to take myself off-leash. I fell in love with this character, and then all of these other new characters. And I just created a brand new story that felt like its own thing, and that doesn't have to feel like it follows one or the other."
The character Hodson is talking about of course Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, who many feel was the highlight of Ayer's much-maligned film. Joining Daddy's Little Monster for DC's femme fatale feature are Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Helena Bertinelli / Huntress, Jurnee Smollet-Bell as Dinah Lance / Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain / Batgirl, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as the villainous Victor Zsasz, and Ewan McGregor as Black Mask. Directing the film is DEAD PIGS helmer Cathy Yan.
Little is known about the film's plot thus far, though you can be certain that it will include plenty of ass-kicking courtesy of the project's unorthodox team of female heroes. It's also been said that BIRDS OF PREY will see Harley carving a new reputation for herself, as she has become sick and tired of being known as the Joker's Clown Qween of Crime.
Buckle up, kiddos, it's going to be a very bumpy ride!
