BIRD BOX, a film based on a novel written by Josh Malerman, was a big hit and something of a pop culture sensation when it hit the Netflix streaming service at the end of 2018, so it's no surprise that Malerman was inspired to start working on a follow-up novel right away. That sequel is titled MALORIE, named after the lead character (who was played by Sandra Bullock in the movie). Scheduled to reach stores on October 1, 2019 when it was first announced, MALORIE is now set to make its way out into the world on July 21st.
Copies can be pre-ordered HERE.
The story Malerman crafted for this one will allow readers to catch up with
Malorie and her two children, Tom and Olympia, survivors of a unknown entity that causes people to commit suicide upon seeing it. Ten years after finding salvation in a school for the blind, Malorie and her children find a new home but must confront the creatures once again after Malorie learns there's a possibility that there are more survivors all these years later.
In the new book, Malerman takes readers on another frightening journey as Malorie, Tom and Olympia must venture out into the world with their blindfolds once again and confront an enemy they are unable to see. Will they find more survivors? Will the true origins of the creature finally be revealed? What other dangers lie in store for Malorie?
Another description lets us know that
the creatures are not the only thing Malorie fears: There are the people who claim to have caught and experimented on the creatures. Murmerings of monstrous inventions and dangerous new ideas. And rumors that the creatures themselves have changed into something even more frightening.
I haven't read the BIRD BOX novel, but I really enjoyed the movie, so I look forward to finding out what happens next. I'm also really curious to see whether or not Bullock will want to come back to star in a MALORIE adaptation.
The Hollywood Reporter got their hands on a short excerpt from the novel that can be read at THIS LINK.
