Bird Box is getting a sequel… novel

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Last year, director Susanne Bier and screenwriter Eric Heisserer's (ARRIVAL) adaptation of author Josh Malerman's horror-thriller BIRD BOX hit Netflix. The film starred Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, and John Malkovich, and has since become – for lack of a better term – a phenomenon. What with the challenges and whatnot. And today it looks a sequel is on the way… in the form of a new novel by Malerman called MALORIE

Malerman on Malorie:

…between Bird Box coming out and the time since I’ve been writing Malorie, I’ve been asked a ton of times: people want to know what happened with Boy and Girl. But as much as I care about Boy and Girl, this isn’t their story. The Bird Box world is Malorie’s story, and I wanted to know more about her. I wanted to get to know her even better. At the end of the movie, I turned to my girl Allison and said, “I want to know what happens next!” and she’s like, “Well, you know, you could make that happen,” so it really was this warm feeling.

He then adds:

I will say this: we get to know both Malorie and the creatures better.

Sounds good to me. Not that I'll be reading this book. But I might watch the Netflix adaptation. If there is one. Malorie will be out October 1, 2019. Check out the cover art below and then let us know what you think!

The Netflix film followed this synopsis:

When a mysterious force decimates the population, only one thing is certain — if you see it, you die. The survivors must now avoid coming face to face with an entity that takes the form of their worst fears. Searching for hope and a new beginning, a woman and her children embark on a dangerous journey through the woods and down a river to find the one place that may offer sanctuary. To make it, they'll have to cover their eyes from the evil that chases them — and complete the trip blindfolded.

BIRD BOX is directed by Susanne Bier from a screenplay written by Eric Heisserer (ARRIVAL) based on the book of the same name by Josh Malerman. Chris Morgan, Barbara Muschietti (STEPHEN KING'S IT), Scott Stuber, Dylan Clark, and Clayton Townsend produced. Bullock's costars include Trevante Rhodes, John Malkovich, Lil Rel Howery, Jacki Weaver, BD Wong, and Sarah Paulson. The movie is now streaming on Netflix.
