With IT: CHAPTER TWO now playing in theaters, and making some serious box-office bucks, the saga of The Losers Club and Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard) is now complete, but this is Hollywood we're talking about, so we should never say never to another IT movie.
Bill Skarsgard recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly and discussed what it would take to get him to return to play the homicidal clown once again.
It would have to be the right type of approach to it. The book ends where the second movie ends, so that is the final chapter of this story. There is this interesting aspect of going back in time before all this happened. There might be a story there that might be worth exploring. Obviously that would be a story that’s not in the book, it would be a freestanding story, but obviously within the same universe. So, there might be something interesting out of it. I think it would be fun.
As Pennywise is quite the ancient entity, there's plenty of history to draw from before his encounters with the Losers Club. Director Andy Muschietti told io9 that this mythology would be the perfect ground for further storytelling. "There is a whole mythology to the book though," Muschietti said. "Mythology is something that always has opportunities to explore. It has been on Earth for millions of years. He’s been in contact with humans for hundreds of years, every 27 years. So you can imagine the amount of material. It’s always exciting to think of eventually exploring this mythology." While it would be exciting, Muschietti notes that "there's nothing on the table" regarding further IT movies at the moment. While I doubt that we'll actually see another installment in the franchise, we will likely see more of IT in future as Andy Muschietti has commented on director's cuts of both chapters and well as a supercut which would combine them. IT: CHAPTER TWO is now playing in theaters, so be sure to check out reviews from our own Chris Bumbray and Paul Shirey!
Would you be down for another IT movie exploring the entity's earlier years?
