Controversial comedian Bill Cosby has plans to ditch the orange jumpsuit for one of his trademark sweaters, announcing he hopes to launch a comedy tour sometime in 2023.
In a recent interview, the 85-year-old Cosby said, “When I come out of this, I feel that I will be able to perform and be the Bill Cosby that my audience knows me to be…There’s so much fun to be had in this storytelling that I do. Years ago, maybe 10 years ago, I found it was better to say it after I write it.” According to Variety, the tour would begin in either the spring or summer of next year.
Bill Cosby was convicted of aggravated indecent assault in 2018, for which he was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison. In 2021, it was overturned. The same year as his conviction, Bill Cosby was booted from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, citing their Standards of Conduct.
Earlier this year, Showtime released a limited docuseries about Bill Cosby called We Need to Talk About Cosby, which aimed to “explore the complex story of Cosby’s life and work, weighing his actions against his indisputable global influence through interviews with comedians, cultural commentators, journalists and women who share their most personal, harrowing encounters with Cosby. Through archival footage, Cosby reveals who he may have been all along — the antithesis of the principled, public figure who became a hero, not only to African American people but to all people.”
Despite his crimes, Bill Cosby has undoubtedly been one of the most iconic comedians ever. In 2004, Comedy Central named him the 8th greatest stand-up comedian ever, while Bill Cosby: Himself has been cited as one of the best specials ever. His hit series, The Cosby Show, was also revolutionary–even if Rolling Stone wants to ignore its legacy.
With that, while many would certainly turn up to see the legendary the Cos perform, for most it would most certainly be an h-e-l-l no!
