Back in 2019, director Jean-Pierre Jeunet said he had an idea for a robot movie he wanted to make, but that it was proving difficult to find funding for the project. “So maybe it’ll be for Netflix, who knows. As a last resort, I will try Netflix.” Turning to Netflix was a good move, because they gave him the funding for his movie – which is titled Bigbug – and it was released through the streaming service today. To help you decide whether or not you want to head over to Netflix and check out the new Jeunet film, we have the trailer for Bigbug embedded above.
Bigbug tells the story of
suburbanites who are locked in for their own protection by their household robots while an android revolt rages outside.
Jeunet wrote the screenplay with Guillaume Laurant.
The French-language film stars Isabelle Nanty (Not on the Lips), Elsa Zylberstein (I’ve Loved You So Long), Claude Perron (WorkinGirls), Stéphane De Groodt (Asterix at the Olympic Games), Youssef Hajdi (Divorce Club), Claire Chust (Problemos), François Levantal (Murders at Rouen), Alban Lenoir (French Blood), Marysole Fertard (Savage Days), Hélie Thonnat (I Am Guilty), and Dominique Pinon (Outlander).
While Jeunet has directed some shorts and a TV movie in the meantime, Bigbug is his first feature to be released since 2013. His previous films include Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children, Amélie, A Very Long Engagement, Micmacs, The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet… and a generally unpopular entry in the Alien franchise, Alien: Resurrection.
Bigbug doesn’t appear to be going over very well with critics so far. It’s got a 46% positive rating at Rotten Tomatoes, with reviews calling it dreadful, a mess, and a demonstration of “the perils of total creative freedom”.
