Grab a fine cut of meat and put up your dukes because a trailer for the upcoming George Foreman biopic is entering the ring! The biopic, titled Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World, is directed by George Tillman Jr. from a story he co-wrote with Dan Gordon and Frank Baldwin. As you can see from today’s Big George Foreman trailer, the film explores the life and times of the legendary boxer-turned-minister.
Khris Davis plays the iconic George Foreman, while Forest Whitaker plays Doc Broadus, the boxer’s longtime trainer who introduced him to the sport. Sullivan Jones plays Muhammad Ali, who fought Foreman throughout his storied career, including the Rumble in the Jungle bout in Zaire.
Big George Foreman also stars Jasmine Mathews, Sullivan Jones, Lawrence Gilliard Jr, John Magaro, and Sonja Sohn.
The Big George Foreman trailer presents several beats of the plot, from Foreman’s struggles as a bullied youth to finding comfort and identity in the sport of boxing. The film touches on his gold medal-winning fight at the 1968 Olympics and his finding faith and becoming a minister. The biopic explores his 1994 comeback, which made him the oldest world heavyweight champion in history. While the film zeroes in on Foreman’s many accomplishments, it also showcases the blood, sweat, and tears accompanying his journey. There’s even a nod to the famous George Foreman Grill, which my parents bought when I was in my early teens.
“We went through an extensive search across the world to find someone who could channel George, and ultimately, Khris was the only one who could encapsulate his journey so effortlessly as he went from one of boxing’s most feared fighter to retirement only to achieve one of the most astonishing comebacks at age 45,” Tillman Jr. told Deadline in 2021.
“I’m excited to work with Forest, as I’ve wanted to work with him for as long as I can remember,” Tillman Jr. said about Whitaker joining the project. “I’m so inspired by his talents and his vast body of work. I’m thrilled that he’s joining our cast to play the iconic role of Doc Broadus as we embark on this journey to tell the incredible true story of George Foreman.”
