The Hollywood Critics Association Awards happened this weekend with them splitting the ceremony into two nights: the first dedicated to broadcast and cable, the second night devoted on streaming.
The HCA’s big cable winner actually went to two shows in a tie, with AMC’s Better Call Saul and HBO’s Succession splitting the award for Best Cable Network Drama Series. Better Call Saul‘s much-anticipated series finale airs tonight on AMC.
Better Call Saul actually cleaned up at the HCA’s, winning Best Actor in a Broadcast or Cable Drama Series for star Bob Odenkirk. Giancarlo Esposito won Best Supporting Actor in a Broadcast or Cable Drama Series, while their co-star, Rhea Seehorn, goes on to win the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Broadcast or Cable Drama Series. It’s a nice way for that show’s run to end, and hopefully the Emmys will take note.
On the comedy side, notable winners included the hit HBO show, Barry. The star, Bill Hader, took home the award for Best Actor in a Broadcast or Cable Comedy Series. His co-star, Henry Winkler, took home the award for supporting actor. Surprisingly, Barry did not win the overall comedy award for broadcast or cable, though. That went to What We Do in the Shadows. While the Best Actress in a Network Comedy goes to Abbott Elementary‘s Quinta Brunson. Abbott Elementary would also take home the award for Best Broadcast Network Comedy Series.
Over on the streaming side, Apple TV Plus took the two top awards, with Severance winning for Best Drama, while Ted Lasso won for Best Comedy. Squid Game‘s Lee Jung-jae won for Best Actor in a Drama Series. Best Actress in a Drama Series was a tie between Britt Lower on Severance and Laura Linney on Ozark. Martin Short and Selena Gomez both took home acting awards for Only Murders in the Building on the comedy side.
