Better Call Saul final season hopes to start shooting early next year

Breaking Bad continues to be one of the finest TV shows of all-time, so when creator Vince Gilligan announced that he would be following up the series with a prequel centered around Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), I'll admit that I thought it was a terrible idea. History has certainly proven me wrong as Better Call Saul has not only grown to become a worthy successor to Breaking Bad, but also a fantastic series in its own right. The series is looking to conclude with a sixth and final final season, and although COVID-19 has definitely delayed it, work has been progressing and co-creator Peter Gould is hopeful that production will finally kick off next year.

While speaking with Deadline, Better Call Saul co-creator Peter Gould provided an update on the final season, saying that the writing staff is well on the way to completing their work.

We’re pretty late in the season. We are in a zoom room everyday. We got to meet for two weeks at the beginning. For the season — it’s like trying to dance in quick sand. It’s a handicap in my book to be working remotely, but I love what we came up with.

Gould said that they "have a few more scripts than we usually do" this time around (13 compared to 10) but he says, "our fervent desire is to begin shooting early next year." As excited as I am to see how Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould wrap up the series, I'm more than willing to wait for them to perfect it. Gould has previously teased that when Better Call Saul comes to an end, we might just see Breaking Bad in a very different light. "I think we're going to learn things about the characters in Breaking Bad that we didn't know," Gould said. "We're going to learn things about the events of Breaking Bad that we didn't know. And we're going to learn things about the fates of a lot of these characters that may surprise people or certainly throw them into a different light. I think we started this 2007, so that's 13 years of work that's distilled, this all has to fit together. Hopefully like a perfect jigsaw puzzle. I don't know if all the joints are going to be absolutely even. I'd sure hope so. We're going to do our best to sand it down." Although we've still got a bit of a wait ahead of us until the sixth and final season of Better Call Saul, we do have some Bob Odenkirk in our future with the release of Nobody on February 26, 2021, which finds the actor getting surprisingly and convincingly bad-ass.
