Production is just underway on the first season of AMC’s Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul and the show already has some pretty big announcements. The spinoff/prequel starring Bob Odenkirk has been given an order for a second season comprising of 13 episodes. The first season as we know will have ten episodes but unfortunately we will be waiting a little longer to see them.
Better Call Saul was originally set to premiere in November, but AMC has decided to hold off until early 2015, with Season 2 to air in early 2016. There isn't an exact date yet, but interestingly enough it will air alongside The Walking Dead and Talking Dead. Talk about Sunday domination.
AMC president Charlie Collier said in a statement:
"Production on Better Call Saul is underway and we could not be more proud of nor more excited about the work to date. We join the fans in eager anticipation for this series and today we happily confirm that our initial Saul order is for two seasons and a total of 23 episodes"
"When introducing any series, especially one with the DNA of Breaking Bad, there are countless factors to consider in making sure the show gets the launch it deserves. We have a strong history with Vince, Peter, Bob, the studio and so many involved with this production; we are enjoying the process on Saul and all share a focus on making it a true television event. No half measures."
The first official photo from the set was released as well:
Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan will direct the pilot and will then continue on as co-showrunner of the series alongside Peter Gould, the Breaking Bad writer who created Saul Goodman. It's not a huge delay but it certainly stings a little because I’ve been anticipating this show since it was just a germ of an idea. Saul was my favorite character and everything Bob Odenkirk did with that character was pure magic.
Here's a little known fact (not really): Breaking Bad is a sequel to a Better Call Saul, an obscure legal dramedy that aired for in the 80s. Watch the intro:
