Best Underrated 90s Action Movies – Part 1

Here on JoBlo, we’ve posted a ton of articles and videos about the best underrated 80’s action movies (check them out here, here and here) but the nineties were full of incredible action movies too! While a lot of them are considered classics now, some of the best movies (you never saw) routinely get underrated, so here on JoBlo we’ve got a few more recommendations for you!

No Escape (1994) – A soldier convicted for murdering his commanding officer is dumped and left to die on a prison island inhabited by two camps of convicts. Ray Liotta stars in a rare action hero turn, while Stuart Wilson steals scenes as the baddie. This was an early directorial effort for Martin Campbell, who was hired to make Goldeneye on the strength of his work here.

The Replacement Killers (1998) – A troubled hitman seeks aid from a forger to help him get papers to China. However, the drug lord has hired replacements to finish the job, and kill the hitman. Chow Yun-Fat stars in his first American action flick, alongside Mira Sorvino. This would also mark Antoine Fuqua’s feature directorial debut, and would launch him as one of the biggest action directors in the world, even if the film died at the box office.

Strange Days (1995) – A former cop turned street-hustler accidentally uncovers a conspiracy in Los Angeles in 1999. Ralph Fiennes stars alongside a badass Angela Bassett in Kathryn Bigelow’s kinetic cyber thriller. A huge flop in 1995, the film is now considered a classic by those who’ve managed to see it.
